UEFA Champions League quarter-finals Previews and Predictions

Atalanta vs. PSG

Date: 12/8/2020

Venue: Estadio da Luz, Lisbon

Time: 8:00pm

One of the most eagerly anticipated matches in this seasons UEFA Champions League last eight sees Italian Serie A side Atalanta play French Ligue 1 champions PSG on Wednesday.

Considering the array of attacking talents available to both teams and their scoring record, both domestically and on the continent, this should be a mouth-watering clash.

However, both managers Gian Piero Gasperini (Atalanta) and Thomas Tuchel (PSG) will head into the game without the services of certain key players due to a combination of injuries, suspensions and personal reasons.

PSG star forward Kylian Mbappe is a major doubt despite returning to training in the days leading up to the encounter after recovering from an ankle injury (best bet is starting on the bench), while Italian midfielder Marco Verratti is ruled out with injury and experienced Argentine Angel Di Maria suspended for this tie.

This mean’s the Parisians could line-up with Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye in midfield and the trio of Neymar, Mauro Icardi and Pablo Sarabia in attack.

Gasperini appears to have fewer concerns with an almost fully fit squad bar the absence of Slovenian striker Josip Ilicic who misses out entirely due to personal reasons.

This should be an extremely open match with numerous goal scoring opportunities, goals at both ends and at least over 2.5 goals.

The less experienced Italian club should have the upper hand as they have better match practice coming into the encounter, have a reputation for outscoring their opposition and we expect both Papu Gomez and Ruslan Malinovskyi to play decisive roles in handing Atalanta an historic victory.

Prediction: Atalanta 3 – 2 PSG

RB Leipzig vs. Atletico Madrid

Date: 13/8/2020

Venue: Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon

Time: 8:00pm

German side RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid of Spain meet in the second quarter-final on Thursday night at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon, Portugal.

Leipzig under the tutelage of emerging manager Julian Nagelsmann will be looking to continue their giant killing strides against a compact and experienced Atletico team, twice losing finalists in the competition.

However, they will be one major omission for the Germans, erstwhile top goal scorer Timo Werner, who has completed a move to English Premier League club Chelsea; hence the goal scoring responsibility falls on Patrick Schick and Yussuf Poulsen.

The Spaniards aren’t without concerns of theirs, Angel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko missing out after testing positive for Coronavirus but other than those unavoidable omissions, Diego Simeone has an almost fully fit squad available to select.

Games like this are mostly decided by the smallest details and not youthful exuberance which puts the Germans at a huge disadvantage against a team who have mastered the art of ultra defending.

We predict a low scoring encounter to be deservedly won by Atletico Madrid, bringing an end to Leipzig’s brilliant second campaign in this competition.

Prediction: Leipzig 0 – 1 Atletico

Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich

Date: 14/8/2020

Venue: Estadio da Luz, Lisbon

Time: 8:00pm

The most high-profile of the four UEFA Champions League quarter-final pairings sees Barcelona and Bayern Munich meet in Lisbon on Friday night.

The German’s come into the encounter in bullish form after easily seeing off the challenge from Chelsea on Saturday, Robert Lewandowski continuing from where he left off by netting a brace.

It was a fantastic team performance by the Bavarians and they will be confident of going toe-to-toe against a Barcelona team that haven’t being at their best since the start of the year (coincidentally a period which saw Quique Setien arrive the club) and rightfully come into this fixture as the underdogs.

The Spaniards’ heavy reliance on star player Lionel Messi will definitely count against them against a mobile and functional Bayern unit and the outcome of this game might be the catalyst for some soul searching within the Barcelona ranks.

We expect Lewandowski to extend his goal scoring form, goals at both ends as the Bayern defence admittedly isn’t their strongest department and the Germans to comfortably progress into the last four of the competition.

Prediction: Barcelona 1 – 3 Bayern

Manchester City vs. Lyon

Date: 15/8/2020

Venue: Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon

Time 8:00pm

French team Olympique Lyon stand between Manchester City’s hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-final when the pair meet in the last fixture of the quarter-final pairings on Saturday.

The match has a more personal angle for City coach Pep Guardiola, who is targeting winning the competition for the first time abroad and he will do everything possible to attain success with the English club at the fourth attempt.

Lyon did the unthinkable knocking out Juventus on the away rule in the round of 16, but considering the Italians have a team with an older average squad age in comparison to the much younger Citizens, then Les Gones are quite aware they have to double their effort against a free scoring City side.

While top scorer Memphis Depay obviously carries Lyon’s biggest threat, it could be former Manchester City academy graduate Jason Denayer (now a stalwart in Lyon’s defence) and goalkeeper Anthony Lopes that could grab the headlines as they aim to stop a rampaging attack.

We don’t expect Manchester City to keep a clean sheet as their suspect defence should be breached at least once. We predict goals at both ends, over 3.5 goals, a Raheem Sterling strike and a Manchester City victory.

Prediction: Man City 3 – 1 Lyon
