Everton vs. Liverpool
Venue: Goodison Park
The Merseyside derby kickoff’s the latest round of Premier League matches as league leaders Everton hosts champions Liverpool at Goodison Park.
The Toffees must be feeling extra motivated to finally win this historic fixture after going exactly a decade without any success and their optimism appear quite legitimate as the Reds were battered by Aston Villa before the international break and remain without Alison who is out with injury.
That means Adrian retains his spot in goal and with the red-hot form of league top goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin and added to the fact Carlo Ancelotti has a way of getting victories against Jurgen Klopp’s teams, this might be another forgettable game for Liverpool.
We expect Calvert-Lewin to score for a fifth successive league game, goals at both ends and Everton to end a 10-year wait for a league win in this derby.
Prediction: Everton 2 – 1 Liverpool
Chelsea vs. Southampton
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea’ firepower should prove too much for Southampton to handle as they travel to west London to play the Blues.
Injured duo Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic have regained full fitness and either of the pair is expected to be involved from the start. For the Saints, they got the win against West Brom before the international, but not in convincing fashion and Danny Ings was denied extending his goal tally in the fixture, a cause which could be aided if new season-long loan signing Theo Walcott is given a start in a fixture he has fond memories.
We predict this encounter to be high scoring like recent matches involving the pair. Both teams aren’t the best at defending, so they should let in goals, over 3.5 goals and a Chelsea home win.
Prediction: Chelsea 3 – 1 Saints
Manchester City vs. Arsenal
Venue: Etihad Stadium
The Etihad Stadium should be set agog when Manchester City welcomes Arsenal in Saturday’s third game. The Citizens continue to be plagued by a striker crisis as Raheem Sterling remains an injury doubt for this game, while Gabriel Jesus is on the road to recovery.
Sergio Aguero returned to training during the international break following a three-month injury layoff and it remains to be seen if he will feature at any point, same situation for Kevin De Bruyne who got injured on international duty for Belgium and is rated touch-and-go for this game.
This could give Arsenal the slightly upper hand considering they have no major injury concerns and have been further strengthened by the arrival of Thomas Partey, a big plus in midfield.
This should be an open game where City will try to boss possession but Arsenal’s ever improving midfield should adequately hold firm. We predict both teams to score and for a third successive league game, Manchester City are denied a win as this game ends in a draw.
Prediction: Man City 1 – 1 Arsenal
Newcastle vs. Manchester United
Venue: Saint James’ Park
The final game of Saturday takes us to Saint James’ Park where Newcastle United hosts Manchester United.
The Magpies find themselves in the top half of the table, on the back of two victories, while in contrast, the Red Devils are only two spots above the relegation zone after clinching the solitary win and will need to put a massive performance to bounce back from the humiliating home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Considering United have a major defensive crisis and Newcastle’s front line rejuvenated with the addition of Callum Wilson, this could turn out to be yet another unhappy trip to the north east for the visitors.
We predict a Newcastle United victory, a second straight league loss for Manchester United on this ground.
Prediction: Newcastle 2 – 1 Man Utd
Sheffield United vs. Fulham
Venue: Bramall Lane
Winless pair Sheffield United and Fulham gets us underway in Sunday’s Premier League matches. The Blades have surprisingly struggled after a blistering return to the top division last term, scoring just their solitary league goal this season against Arsenal.
The Cottagers might have improved their squad with a few new additions, notably goalkeeper Alphonso Areola who played a massive role in maintaining a respectable scoreline in the defeat to Wolverhampton, but their lack of firepower upfront continues to be their undoing.
We predict Sheffield United to secure a victory and a first clean sheet of the season.
Prediction: Sheffield 2 – 0 Fulham
Crystal Palace vs. Brighton
Venue: Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace will attempt an immediate response as they host Brighton at Selhurst Park. The Eagles were trounced by Chelsea just before the international break, while the Seagulls put up a decent showing in an eventual defeat away to leaders Everton.
This should be a fairly open game with both teams evenly squaring up each other, hence we tip a score draw to settle this game.
Prediction: Palace 1 – 1 Brighton
Tottenham vs. West Ham United
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United square off in the London derby, a game which marks the return of David Moyes to the touchline after missing the Hammers’ last two fixtures due to COVID-19 related issues.
Spurs were big winners at Manchester United in their last league fixture but they need to be wary of a West Ham team that have won their last two games, including putting an end to Leicester City’s excellent start to the season.
Like previous meetings between these two teams, this should produce a banger, but somehow we feel the international break might just have slowed down West Ham’s momentum. We expect to see quality goals at both ends, Michail Antonio and Harry Kane on the score sheet and Tottenham to do just enough to clinch the victory.
Prediction: Tottenham 3 – 2 Hammers
Leicester City vs. Aston Villa
Venue: King Power Stadium
Leicester City and Aston Villa conclude the Sunday matches with another potentially mouth-watering encounter.
The Foxes were stunned by West Ham in the last round and will attempt an instant response against a Villa team, second on the log, that have clearly punched above their belt this season, an historic home win against Liverpool their standout performance and result.
Given their perfect start to the season, Villa will fancy their chances of further hurting Leicester, who looked completely out of their depth against the Hammers. We expect this game to produce a goals feast and a no victor, no vanquished outcome.
Prediction: Leicester 2 – 2 Villa
West Brom vs. Burnley
West Brom hosts Burnley in the first of two games on Monday. The Baggies have struggled since their return to the topflight, taking just the solitary point off Chelsea and they face a pointless Burnley team that could fancy their chances of opening their seasons account.
West Brom haven’t been out rightly poor but they just seem to still be coming to terms with the Premier League’s intensity, hence we predict an away Burnley win.
Prediction: West Brom 0 – 2 Burnley
Leeds United vs. Wolverhampton
Venue: Elland Road
The final game of the round takes place on Monday night when Leeds United hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road.
Leeds were absolutely brilliant as they forced Manchester City to a draw on their last outing, while Wolves have been far from their best in the last two fixtures, managing to get over the line against a struggling Fulham.
We expect this to be yet another brilliant game of football by two teams with a similar playing pattern, a draw settling this encounter.
Prediction: Leeds 1 – 1 Wolves
